CMETB’s Response to the Ukrainian Crisis

In line with the national response by Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI), Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) are joining efforts to meet the needs of Ukrainian people as they enter Ireland.

The 16 education and training boards across the State have set up “Regional Education and Language Teams” (REALT) for Ukrainian families. The primary role of REALT is to build on existing education structures and the initial focus will be on assisting families in securing school places. REALT will also support schools to access the needs of Ukrainian children as they emerge, to advise and support the Department of Education in developing new capacity where required.

At a local level in Cavan and Monaghan, CMETB have appointed a dedicated REALT coordinator who is the regional point of contact for families and schools requiring assistance. A dedicated phone line and email address have been set up. CMETB is also currently increasing capacity for ESOL provision (ESOL: English for Speakers of Other Languages) and have a Ukrainian national tutor ready to deal with prospective learners.

CMETB is also liaising with local authorities and other regional structures to co-ordinate the regional response in Cavan and Monaghan. CMETB personnel are working closely with both Monaghan and Cavan County Councils, sitting on steering groups that have been established to deal with the crisis.

In addition to REALT provision, CMETB Adult Education Services have done a significant amount of work to provide classes in the local communities for the Ukrainian people arriving in Cavan and Monaghan. These efforts is ongoing to ensure the Ukrainian people are able to access education when they arrive. CMETB Adult Education Services currently have approximately 250 adult Ukrainians participating in programmes throughout both counties. Classes are currently running in Ballyjamesuff, Ballyhaise, Virginia, Cavan Town, Cootehill, Baileboro, Monaghan and Carrickmacross for Adults from Ukraine. For any queries please contact:
