CMETB Confirmed as Patron for New Special School in County Monaghan

The Department of Education have formally requested that Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) act as the patron body for a new special school in County Monaghan, to be established in Castleblayney. Patronage was agreed at the December meeting of the ETB Board.

In October, Minister Heather Humphreys announced plans for the school, which is set to open next year. This will be the first dedicated special school in the county, catering for  children and young people with complex special educational needs up to the age of 18.

CMETB is delighted to undertake the role of patron body, furthering its commitment to inclusive education and supporting the diverse needs of students across the region. Dr. Fiona McGrath, Chief Executive of CMETB, welcomed the announcement, stating:

This vital project reflects CMETB’s commitment to fostering high-quality and inclusive learning environments for all students. CMETB is dedicated to ensuring the successful delivery of this school, and we look forward to working with the Department of Education, the National Council for Special Education (NCSE), and all stakeholders to bring this important vision to life for the community of County Monaghan.”

While the Department of Education works to finalise the school’s exact location, the NCSE has already commenced assessing the needs of the area to determine the specific requirements for the new school, in order to plan relevant supports for students and families in County Monaghan.

Detailed planning will be undertaken by CMETB with the Department of Education in the areas of enrolment, policy development, resource allocation, staff recruitment and infrastructure. The new school is expected to open by September 2025.
